National and State Awards -Why we want small unknown movies to win ?

Kaadu Pookkunna Neram and Manhole which won Kerala State Awards in 2016

Let us look at the conversation between two cinema lovers to understand our attitude towards National and State Awards.

Baahubali 2‘s Trailer is brilliant. Looking forward to April 28th for its release”
“Hey, Bahubali itself was an overrated movie. That movie winning the National award for best film in 2016 was the biggest joke that year ”

“But then which movie do you think should have won the National Award in 2015 ?”
“Look there are so many small unknown movies that deserved to win the award”

“Can you name one? ”
“That I don’t know. But there should be many.”

“Have you watched the National award winning best films of 2014 and 2015 – ‘Ship of Theseus’ and ‘Court’ ?”
“No”

“But then how do you know they are good and deserve the National awards”
“Because they are small, lesser known movies. They also look to be slow paced. So obviously they deserve the awards”

“What’s your opinion about this year’s Kerala state awards”
“I am really happy about this year’s Kerala State awards. Especially that Pulimurugan did not win any awards and Vinayakan won the best actor award”

“Did you watch Rajeev Ravi’s Njan Steve Lopez”
“No”

“But then why did you watch Kammattipadam?”
“Because , obviously it starred Dulquar Salman”

“Have you watched Kaadu pookkunna Neram which won award for best cinematography, sound, colourist etc ? Is it really better than Pulimurugan? ”
“No, I havent watched it”

“Have you watched Manhole which won award for best film and director”
“No”

“But then how do you know they are good and deserve the state awards”
“Because they are small, lesser known movies. They also look to be slow paced. So obviously they deserve the awards”.
